TYPES OF ROOFTOPS

10 SORTS OF ROOFTOPS YOU DIDN’T THINK ABOUT

1. GABLE ROOF

THE GABLE ROOF IS THE MOST COMMON OF ALL ROOF STYLES. BUILT WITH TWO SLOPING SIDES THAT LEAD UP TO MEET AT A PEAK, THERE ARE SEVERAL DIFFERENT WAYS TO BUILD A GABLE ROOF. THESE INCLUDE STANDARD GABLE ROOFS WHICH HAVE NO OVERHANG, OVERHANGING GABLE ROOFS WHICH DO HAVE AN OVERHANG AND TRIANGULAR SHAPED OVERHANGS THAT COMBINE BOTH WELL. THIS OFFERS VERSATILITY IN DESIGN AS WELL AS SPACE AND SUN PROTECTION FOR YOUR HOME.

2. HIP ROOF

HIP STYLE HOMES ARE NOT AS COMMON IN COLDER CLIMATES WOULD NOT BE USED IN THE SOUTHWEST. THEY HAVE A SHALLOW SLOPE AND PROVIDE LESS BUILT-IN WINDOW AREA FOR NATURAL LIGHT. THEY HAVE A 1-3/4 FLOOR JOIST DEPTH WHICH MAKES THEM TRICKY TO CONSTRUCT. THE ROOFLINE IS SOMETIMES STEPPED BUT USUALLY IS MORE GRADUAL TO SLOPING (SIMILAR TO MANSARD) THAN A STEEP MANSARD ROOF PITCH OF 4-1/2 TO 12 IN 12 (3 SECTIONS PER SIDE) RISE AND RUN. THESE ROOFS CAN BE STEEPER THAN SOME HIP ROOFS OR HAVE A SLIGHT UPWARD PITCH INSTEAD OF BEING HORIZONTAL.

3. DUTCH ROOF

THE DUTCH DESIGN IS VERY SIMPLE TO UNDERSTAND. THE BASIC CONCEPT OF A DUTCH ROOF (OR SHED ROOF) INVOLVES TAKING A HIP ROOF AND ADDING A TRIANGLE AT EACH SIDE…HENCE THE TERM “DUTCH.” A HIP ROOF HAS FOUR SIDES, WITH EACH TRIANGLE ADDED BEING ONE-THIRD OF THE ORIGINAL OR APPROXIMATELY 14%. DUTCH ROOFS ALSO HAVE AN OVERHANG ON ALL SIDES OF THE TRIANGLE TO HELP PROTECT AGAINST SUN, RAIN, SNOW, AND DEBRIS.

THE DUTCH ROOF CREATES A COZY FAMILY ROOM WITH VAULTED CEILINGS, ABUNDANT NATURAL LIGHT THROUGH THE UPPER WINDOWS, AND A SOFTER FLOW TO THE HOME. THE GABLED ENTRIES AND DORMERS ADD ARCHITECTURAL INTEREST AND HELP PULL THE EYE UPWARD.

4. MANSARD ROOF

MANSARD, ALSO KNOWN AS A FRENCH ROOF, IS A STYLE OF ROOF THAT HAS TWO PARTS. THE LOWER PART LOOKS LIKE A NORMAL PITCHED ROOF, BUT THE UPPER PORTION HAS MORE OF A BELL-SHAPED CURVE. ALTHOUGH MORE DIFFICULT TO BUILD THAN OTHER TYPES OF ROOFS, MANSARD ROOFS ARE POPULAR BECAUSE THEY OFFER GREAT VIEWS AND HAVE MORE LIVING SPACE.

THE MANSARD ROOF IS A PERFECT ADDITION TO ANY HOME. THE MANSARD STYLE ROOF WAS A STANDARD FOR MANY YEARS AND IS OFTEN SEEN IN FRENCH ARCHITECTURE OR OLDER HOMES. IT IS A BEAUTIFUL OPTION FOR THOSE WHO WANT AN EXTRA ROOM IN THE ATTIC, TALLER SHELVING SPACE, OR MORE LIVING SPACE INSIDE THEIR HOME.

5. FLAT ROOF

A FLAT ROOF COMES IN MANY DIFFERENT SHAPES AND SIZES, BUT ONE THING THEY ALL HAVE IN COMMON ARE VALLEYS. ROOF VALLEYS OCCUR WHERE THE ROOF SLOPES DOWN FROM TWO OR MORE SIDES TO A COMMON PEAK. THE PURPOSE OF THE VALLEY IS TO MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO SEAL THE JOINT BETWEEN THE ROOFS ALONG THE RIDGE LINE OF THE ROOFS. 7. BUTTERFLY ROOF

THE BUTTERFLY ROOF DESIGN FEATURES A HORIZONTAL SLOT RUNNING ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE TOP OF YOUR GREENHOUSE. THIS IS OUR MOST POPULAR ROOF STYLE, AND YOU’LL SEE WHY ONCE YOURS IS BUILT. ITS NATURAL LIGHT AND VENTILATION ARE SUPERB, AND IT EVEN ALLOWS FOR HEAT RETENTION THANKS TO ITS EFFECTIVE INSULATION QUALITIES. IT’S GREAT FOR YEAR-ROUND GARDENING, AND ALSO MAKES A NICE LIGHT STUDIO OR WORKSPACE…

8. GAMBREL ROOF

A GAMBREL ROOF (ALSO CALLED A BARN ROOF, DUTCH BARN OR GERMAN BARN) IS ONE OF THE SIMPLEST STRUCTURAL FORMS USED IN ROOF DESIGN. IT IS SIMILAR TO A MANSARD ROOF IN CONSTRUCTION AND APPEARANCE. THE GAMBREL ROOF IS GENERALLY USED ON BARNS AND INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BARN ROOF AND THE GAMBREL ROOF IS THAT THE GAMBREL ROOF HAS TWO GABLES ON BOTH SIDES, WHILE THE BARN ROOFS HAVE ONLY ONE GABLE AT ONE SIDE.

9. DORMER ROOF

DORMER IS A VERSATILE SMALL SPACE ROOF FOR ANYONE WANTING TO ADD SOME EXTRA HEIGHT UNDER THEIR CURRENT ROOFLINE. DORMER CAN BE ADDED EITHER IN FRONT OF OR BEHIND AN EXISTING GABLE WALL, HELPING YOU CREATE A BEDROOM LOFT, STUDIO SPACE, PLAYROOM, OR HOME OFFICE. DORMER MUST BE PLACED ON TOP OF A LARGE ROOF OR MEDIUM ROOF AND HAS NO INTERIOR SIZE RESTRICTIONS.

A DORMER ROOF BEAUTIFULLY EXTENDS THE LIVING AREA OF YOUR HOME. IT ALSO ADDS SPACE FOR YOU TO ENJOY ON THOSE PEACEFUL SUNSETS.

10. M SHAPED ROOF

THE M SHAPED ROOF IS AN ELEGANT STYLE OF ROOFING THAT IS BEAUTIFUL TO SEE. THIS TYPE OF ROOF FEATURES A DOUBLE GABLE ROOF WITH TWO SLOPED SIDES THAT MEET IN THE MIDDLE WITH CORRESPONDING SLOPES ON EACH SIDE.
